Low Carb Weight Loss Diet Trial (2)The University of Pennsylvania Low Carb Study (2003)Controlled Trial of Low-Carbohydrate Diet for ObesityResultsThis low carb trial found that severely obese subjects with either diabetes or metabolic syndrome lost 4% more weight (in the first 6 months) by limiting carbs than by cutting calories and fat. However, there was no significant difference between two groups after 12 months. The low-carbohydrate diet appeared to improve risk factors for heart disease, but the authors concluded that more research is needed on the safety and effectiveness of this low carb regimen Source: Note: Several other low carb studies echo the above finding that low carb dieting produces more rapid weight loss than low-fat type diet plans, during the first 6 months of the diet trial, followed by an equalization of weight loss between the two groups of subjects by the end of 12 months. |
