Low Carb Weight Loss Diet Trial (1)The Bravata Low Carb Study (2003)Efficacy and Safety
of Low-Carbohydrate Diets: Low Carb Study Conclusion:There is insufficient evidence to make recommendations for or against the use of low-carbohydrate diets, particularly among participants older than age 50 years, for use longer than 90 days, or for diets of 20 g/d or less of carbohydrates. Among the published studies, participant weight loss while using low-carbohydrate diets was principally associated with decreased caloric intake and increased diet duration but not with reduced carbohydrate content. Source: Note: In the (later) Samaha Low Carb Diet Trial, Samaha asserted most of the studies reviewed by the Bravata Survey were too small to produce meaningful data, or did not compare the diet to a traditional low-fat diet. He said studies with more participants, over longer periods of time, are needed to gauge the true effects of low-carbohydrate versus low-fat eating, especially on the risk of heart attack. |
